Install PreVeil on Windows

This topic covers instructions for installing a PreVeil account on a computer for the first time. If you already have a PreVeil account on another computer, tablet, or phone, read about copying an existing PreVeil account to a new device.

PreVeil is currently available for Windows 7 (through January 2020) and above. PreVeil has a web client for email, and it also optionally auto-integrates into Outlook for Windows.

NOTE: PreVeil’s browser requirements are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge or IE 11.

Install on Windows

On the computer where you want to install PreVeil:

Go to and click the “TRY PREVEIL” button in the upper right corner.

Download the Install File

On the next screen, click the “Download for Windows” button.

Another screen displays to let you know that the PreVeil installer is downloading.

When the download is complete, you can access the PreVeil.exe file in your Downloads folder or at the bottom left of your browser.

TIP: If you choose to run the installer from the downloaded file found at the bottom of your browser, click the up arrow to the right of the file name, and then select Open from the menu.

Open the file and run the installer.  When the PreVeil Setup message box displays asking if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device, click Yes.

You are presented with the PreVeil License Agreement screen. Select the “I accept the agreement” radio button, and then click the “Next”  button.

The installation begins.  On the next screen, click “Install” to continue.

As the installation progresses, you will see a screen that looks like this:

NOTE: Please be patient.  The installation can take a few moments.

When the installation is complete, the following window displays. Click “Finish.”

TIP: When PreVeil installs, it loads a shortcut to your desktop and to your Start menu.  These shortcuts take you to the PreVeil web browser where you can check your PreVeil email once you have created your account.

At this time, the shortcut can be used to take you to the PreVeil website where you can create your new PreVeil email account.

Create PreVeil Email Account

Click the PreVeil shortcut on your desktop to go to to create your new account.

Click the “Create Account” button.

Enter your first and last name and the email address* you want to use as your primary PreVeil ID.  Ensure that you have selected the PreVeil Terms of Service check box, and then click “Create Account.”

*An email is sent to this address to verify your identity.

Since the PreVeil account that gets created is permanently associated with this email address, it is important that personal PreVeil accounts be created with personal email addresses (not work email addresses).

You do not have to enter a password to create a PreVeil account. Your private key is your password. This makes for a much more secure account because:

  • No one can steal your key–it’s never stored on a server
  • The key is random and lengthy–it cannot be guessed
  • Keys are unique and not recycled–it’s yours and yours alone

Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your email address.

Open your email inbox and locate the email from PreVeil.

NOTE: You must open and verify your email address on the same computer on which you are installing the PreVeil account.

Click the “I’m on a computer” button.

You are taken to your new PreVeil Inbox and provided with the opportunity to install PreVeil into Outlook.

NOTE: It is not necessary to install PreVeil into Outlook in order to send and receive encrypted emails. You can also do all of that in PreVeil’s Web Mail from your browser.

If you decide not to install PreVeil in Outlook right now, you can come back later to and go to the Settings menu and click “Add to Mail Client.” However, if you do install PreVeil into Outlook now, you will receive a Welcome email from PreVeil in your new PreVeil email account in Outlook.

NOTE: If you choose not to install PreVeil into Outlook at the end of your account creation process, you will still receive a Welcome email from PreVeil that you can access from your browser.  Go to to access your PreVeil web mail.

To learn more about using your PreVeil email account on the Web, see Use PreVeil on your browser.

CAUTION:  It’s important that once your PreVeil account is activated on your device, you configure your recovery settings. If you don’t have recovery settings configured, and you only have your account on one device, and you delete PreVeil, you will permanently lose access to all the data on your account.
